Wayfair Ultimate Halloween Party – Choosing a Halloween Party Theme

I know it’s a litttttleeeee bit early to start thinking about Halloween, seeing as it’s practically a whole month away, but fall is full swing and if you want to throw a killer Halloween party you should definitely start coming up with ideas now! I’ve teamed up with Wayfair and some AWESOME bloggers for the Ultimate Halloween Party! Over the next 2 weeks, one of us is going to show you another element on how to throw the best Halloween party in town, from picking a theme, to invites, decorations, food, costumes, games, and more! So stay tuned until the bottom of the post where you can see where to go next! We are gonna kick it off strong today right here at Dwell Beautiful with one of the most important things to think about when planning a party: the theme!

Picking a party theme can be tough! The options are truly endless. You can go classy and glam, spooky and gruesome, cutesy and humorous, day of the dead, or somewhere in-between. Whatever you choose, it’s important for your party to reflect you and your style!

You’ll also want to consider your party guests. Is it an all ages party where your friends can bring their kids? A 21+ shindig? Is there room for people to bring their friends block party style or do you want it to be an intimate affair with only your closest friends?

When thinking about your party’s theme, draw inspiration from various sources to get your creative juices flowing. This could mean looking at Pinterest, magazines (Martha Stewart Living is a great one for holidays!), movies (Halloweentown, anyone?), TV, and more. Find a few things that inspire you, like a piece of decor, a pumpkin, a throw pillow, or a favorite recipe, and then build your theme around them!

Here are a few inspiring pieces I found for several different types of party themes. See if they get your party-throwing gears turning! 😉

Classy Glam Halloween Party

Happy Halloween Garland // Pillow // Owls // Wreath // Votives // Stemless Wine Glasses

When browsing around I was inspired by some pretty pieces that didn’t scream ‘Halloween’ but still had a mysterious feel that fit the holiday while remaining classy.  If you have a glam and understated Halloween party theme in mind, be on the lookout for pieces that have rich colors – trade out kiddish oranges for golds and bright purples for sultry blacks. Add in some metallics and lightly Halloween-ish decor pieces (think owls, classsy plain pumpkins, and potion bottles) for that perfectly classy feel. This kind of party theme would be great choice for an intimate soiree with a few close friends!

Spooky Haunted Halloween Party

Carved Skull // Chalkboard Tombstone Set // Gargoyle Fountain // Shower Curtain // Spider // Ghost Mirror

To get inspired for a spooky/gruesome Halloween theme, check out decor pieces that have a scary or eerie flair. Skulls, blood, spiders and gore. If you want a party that will frighten the pants off your guests, make this your theme! A lot of party stores have loads of goodies to fit this theme, which also makes it easy to recreate. This kind of party theme is probably best for an older crowd and would be a neat idea to combine a haunted house tour with a spooky dance party!

Cutesy Kid-Friendly Halloween Party

Pumpkin // Ghost // Halloween Mouse // Pillow // Candle Set // Smell My Feet Banner

Kids just love Halloween – from costumes to pumpkins to all that candy, Halloween is a great time for kids to make some fun memories! If you want your party theme to be kid-friendly, look for decorations and pieces with bright colors, friendly faces and soft materials. Kids can even get in on the fun and help you make decorations with a variety of craft supplies. This is also a great theme for a block-party style affair so that people of all ages can enjoy the festivities!

Of course there are endless other options for Halloween party themes than the three I’ve shown here. Day of the Dead, roaring 20s, The Addams family, classic movie monsters, and so much more! The key is to know your intended audience (ages and size of party), find your inspiration and then build your party based on they style you’ve chosen.

Now you’ve gotten your theme down, you can start planning and putting together your invites, decor, menu, activities and more! For all the awesome Halloween posts for planning the perfect party check them out below:
