We’re a month into 2016 and there are all sorts of articles all over the web that are trying to predict what the top trends of 2016 will be. It’s definitely hard to nail down what’s ‘in’ and what’s ‘out’ – who decides these things anyway? If you really love a certain style or design element, by all means go with it! No one should be swayed by what the world says is “popular” – if you love it, make it your own and never apologize for it! However, if you’re interested in adding some new styles to your repertoire, or want to change things up, here are some fun ideas to try this year.
Some of these are easily implemented; put in place by simply moving some furniture around. Others require purchases or remodeling. If you’re looking for a new trend to try out, look below to find the one that works for you and your budget!
Mixed Material Kitchens
Gone are the days of monochromatic kitchens and matching everything. Infuse some pizazz into your kitchen by using a mixture of materials. Pair subway tile with exposed wood beams and brushed gold hardware for a look that pleases the eye. Punch up the look of neutral cabinets with a colored glass backsplash or a brick facade. Just keep pairings within the same color palette and your kitchen will look a treat!

Tech-Less Family Rooms
We all love TV – who doesn’t love catching up (read: binge-watching) their fave shows? I just found out Parks and Rec has a 7th season and my mind is blown. But too much technology isn’t a good thing. Instead of having your living room focused around a screen, ditch the TV and arrange your furniture to promote conversation, reading, and playing family games. Your family relationships will improve and you can always save TV time for a media room, or hide it using a armoire or sliding barn doors.

Statement Mirrors in the Bathroom
Builder-grade bathroom mirrors that take up a whole wall are outdated and a pain to clean. Even more modern framed mirrors are functional but basic. This year a new trend is to add statement mirrors to your powder room. Experiment with size, shape, frame color, and method of hanging to up your wow factor. Love glam? Look for a glitzy gold art deco mirror. All about all things nautical? Pick up a round mirror hung by rope or even a porthole mirror!

Playful Bed Linens
All white bed linens are great for a classic look, but all those neutrals can leave you feeling ho hum about your bedroom. Spice up your sleeping space by bringing in some playful bed linens! Fun patterns, quirky color combos, and pairing different textures together not only makes for an eye-catching bed setup, it will also leave you feeling revived and energized. Reversible duvet covers are a great option if you want to switch up the look, or scour shops for layering pieces or vintage prints. Your bed will thank you for the makeover!

Rose Quartz and Serenity Hues
Both Rose Quartz and Serenity have been named colors of the year by Pantone and are great colors to add to your home decor! The dusty pink and periwinkle blue are both soothing as well as playful. Use a little bit of one or the other (or both!) for a color refresh. Add some new bed linens (see above) with some Serenity accents or bring in artwork with Rose Quartz tones. Don’t want these colors as a permanent part of your life? Then simply add a vase of pretty rose or periwinkle hued flowers for a pop of color without making a big commitment!

What 2016 trend would you be most willing to try?
Great ideas, Erica! The picture of the kitchen you shared is gorgeous.
Thanks so much, Amy! I’m in love with that kitchen, too 🙂
Loving the mixed materials kitchens!
Me too! Wood and white and quartzy goodness. Mmm 🙂
BED LINENS!! yes!! I’m so glad that things are moving towards being more playful with bedding…!! I’m also really intrigued by the tech-less room. We are very close to achieving that in our living room without even trying. There is something to be said for a good ol’ fashioned board game night 🙂
Me too! I really like the look of white linens, but sometimes it’s fun to add some color or texture in there 🙂 And agreed – board game nights are definitely the best!!
