Hi there friends, it’s that time again! You know it and you love it: it’s the Monthly DIY challenge! In case you’re new, here’s the low down: On the 2nd Wednesday of every month, me and my awesome blogger friends create something based on a common theme or material that everyone utilizes. The end results are SO creative and stunning! So far we’ve done Michaels cratespumpkins, wood slicesclear ornamentsorganizational solutions,  plumbing pieces,  the dollar store,  trash to treasure, wood scraps, paint, fabric and pegboard. This month’s material is balsa wood/craft wood/plywood! We all came up with some pretty out of this world awesome uses, so be sure to stick around to the end of the post to see everyone else’s AMAZING projects!

I don’t know about you guys but I just absolutely love love LOVE the HGTV show ‘Fixer Upper’ and especially the hosts, Chip and Joanna Gains. I just adore Chip and Jojo! These guys are seriously my spirit animals. Their great sense of design, their awesome family and their cute relationship just make the show so fun to watch. And all the reveals! Ahh! Why don’t I live in Texas so they can makeover a house for me?!

Their personal home is also just so amazingly gorgeous with tons of charm. One of my favorite parts of their home is their kitchen. All the open shelving, the bright white paint and tile, the exposed wood beam and the church pulpit island. All of it is. magical. One of my favorite parts of their kitchen, though, is the big vintage ‘Super Market’ sign they have hanging above their farmhouse sink. It’s the perfect piece of typographic art that ties the kitchen together and is a quirky piece of decor. I mean the kitchen is basically the super market of your house!

So I decided to make a Fixer Upper/ Chip and Joanna Gaines inspired super market sign for my own kitchen. I just couldn’t resist putting together one of my own in honor of one of my favorite HGTV pairs.

First I sprayed my board with some white spray paint. If you wanted, you could hand paint with some craft or acrylic paint and a brush or roller, but for me, spray paint is just quicker and less cleanup! (Cleaning paint brushes is the worrrrssssttt.) If you do use spray paint, spray a matte finish clear top coat so your letters will stick better.

After it was dry, I taped off some straight lines and used some black acrylic paint to make a border. Chip and Jojo’s sign doesn’t have this, but I thought it added some visual interest and maintained the vintage vibe I was going for! Once everything was dry I sanded the whole board with my 120 grit sanding block to give it a little bit of a weathered look.

On my Silhouette CAMEO, I picked a regular bold font and typed out ‘SUPER MARKET’ and have it cut onto some black vinyl. If you don’t have a Silhouette or Cricut, never fear! You can still do this project. You can either freehand paint the letters or use letter stencils. You could even buy stickers meant for mailboxes and big signs at the hardware store and just peel and stick them on!

I also decided to make the phrase ‘Fresh produce delivered daily” in my Silhouette software to fill up some extra space on my sign and add more visual interest. After that I just added a saw tooth picture hanger to the back with some short screws.

I think it’s a really pretty and fun vintage-style sign that’s perfect for kitchen decor! I’d like to think that Chip and Jojo would be proud 😉

I don’t have much wall space in my kitchen, but there was a little area above the slider tucked up in the cathedral ceiling that was the perfect spot for my new sign. I think it goes pretty well with my EAT letters!
