Hey there lovely readers, it’s that time again! Ya know it and ya love it – it’s time for the Monthly DIY challenge! In case you’re new, here’s the scoop: On the 2nd Wednesday of every month, me and my blogger friends create something based on a common theme or material that everyone uses. The end results are so unique and fantastic! So far we’ve done Michaels crates, pumpkins, wood slices, clear ornaments, organizational solutions, plumbing pieces, the dollar store, trash to treasure, wood scraps, paint, and fabric. And this month’s material is pegboard! I’ve been itching to use pegboard for ages, so this was a fun challenge. We all came up with super creative uses, so be sure to stick around to the end of the post to see everyone else’s AMAZING projects!
I’m not sure if you guys know this about me or not, but I love to crochet. My grandma was an AMAZING crochet artist and she taught me some of the basics before she passed away when I was a teen. A few years ago I decided to get back into it and teach myself some more complicated stitches and have been making a ton of scarves, baby gifts, and projects like my crocheted heart door hanger.
Now taking up this hobby has also mean that I’ve taken up a LOT of yarn! It’s so hard to resist buying all the pretty, soft, colorful yarn! This year I vowed to try to use up most of my stash before buying any more yarn, and so far I’ve been doing a pretty good job! But I still have quite a bit left and so I’ve been keeping it in a bin in the closet. This makes it difficult a.) to see what I have – I usually have to take all the yarn out and dig to the bottom to find what I want, and b.) why not put it on display?? So for this month’s challenge I decided to make a super easy yarn organizer that also functions as a neat artful display so I can always know what I have on hand!
This is seriously the easiest project I’ve ever done!
Seriously.
I just purchased a 2×4 piece of pegboard and a bunch of pegboard hooks like so:
Then I just put the hooks in the pegboard and arranged my skeins of yarn! It’s that simple!
It might look a little funky from the side, but if you look at it from the front, it turns into a beautiful piece of functional art!
I decided to arrange my yarn in a sort of cascading ombre hue fashion, starting with my blacks and grays, transitioning to whites and tans, to green to blue, to red to yellow. I put the hooks in almost a random waving fashion to get the cool art look. I really like being able to see what colors and types of yarn I have on hand and being able to quickly able to grab and use and put back what I need when I need it. Plus it just really makes me happy to look at it – it’s a quirky art statement that’s totally me!
This project took mere minutes and now I have a fun and funky place to store my yarn! When we move it might get put up on a wall, but since our house is seriously lacking in free wall space, it’ll just grace the floor of my craftroom for now. Plus it looks kinda neat leaning like that! Anyway, it was a fun little project that has a functional element to it and I just love how beauty and function can be combined 🙂
Now that you’ve seen my pegboard project you absolutely HAVE to check out all of my friends’ projects! There are seriously some amazing and inspiring ideas and DIYs and you don’t want to miss out. I mean it! 😉
See? SUCH cool projects! This challenge was a lot of fun, so be sure to stick around for next month’s DIY challenge!
What’s your favorite way to use pegboard?
I love that you learned to crochet from your grandmother! That’s such a sweet memory of her that will stay with you forever. Your yarn organizer is super funky and I love it! I never would have thought to create something to doubles as art!
It’s definitely a special memory I have of her and I’d like to think that she’s happy that I’ve continued to pursue it! I’m definitely happy with how it turned out 🙂
This is cool, Erica! It does look like those interesting wall weavings that are so popular now! I love how you turned your yarn into art!
Aw, thanks so much, Bre! I’m definitely happy with how it turned out 🙂 But now I want to buy even MORE yarn to fill it in more! Hah
This is such a great idea! I think it looks good, too!
Thanks so much, Heather! It’s definitely keeping me more organized!
Aw man I used to know how to crochet and this really makes me want to re-learn! Love all the pretty yarns and how you arranged them! I can see this looking even cooler when it’s completely full of fuzzy, fun colors! I bet your kitty would love it 😉
Thanks so much, Bre! You should definitely try your hand at crochet again and make baby girl some tiny booties! 🙂 I can’t wait to fill the rest of the board in and yes, the kitties definitely find it tempting and interesting! haha
I’m up to my elbows in yarn at my house (so many beautiful patterns, so little time to actually knit them). What a great idea way to tidy them all up and show them off at the same time! Functional art for the win 🙂
Isn’t that always the case? Haha. So much yarn and I just keep buying more when I should be using it up! 😉 Definitely functional art for the win haha. Thanks so much for stopping by, Skye! 🙂
Great idea, Erica! Nothing better than having your supplies organized! Hope you’re having a great week! 🙂
Thanks so much, Kendra! I hope you’re having a great week as well!
