10 DIY Halloween Couples Costumes

diy halloween couples costumes

Halloween is just around the corner and that means that it’s time to start thinking about costumes if you haven’t yet already! I’m a little behind of figuring out my costume this year. Probably because I haven’t worn one in a few years! Back in college, we used to have awesome parties (no alcohol involved) just lots of silly fun and dancing and fantastic costumes put together from pieces from the thrift store. Since graduating, we haven’t done much for Halloween, but now that our lives are more settled and we have a home of our own, we thought we might start up the tradition of having a party again! And a party means costumes πŸ™‚

I love the idea of couples costumes for Halloween! Dressing up with your significant others is great fun and you and your partner can make a date of putting your costumes together πŸ™‚ Here are 10 (well, more like 13) of my favorite DIY Halloween Couples Costumes. These can all be put together with pieces for the thrift store or from things you probably already have in your closet!

1. Mary Poppins and Bert

diy halloween couples costumesOnce classic Disney couple’s costume that never gets old is good ol’ Mary Poppins and Bert! For Mrs Poppins – a black skirt, white button up, red belt and bow tie, and a black hat decorated with faux flowers! Bert is even easier as he can be done up by using a set of slacks, a button up, vest, suspenders, neck kerchief and cap!

2. Day of the Dead

The Day of the Dead is a celebration in Mexico where people pray for a celebrate those who have passed on. It’s a a very color celebration, with a common and notable feature being the sugar skulls and skeletons that make their presences as anything from cookies to decorations. A more beautiful and creative costume than just a plain skeleton, Day of the Dead skeletons can be achieved through decorative face paint and traditional Mexican-style garb.

3. Princess Buttercup and Westley

diy halloween couples costumesThe Princess Bride is a movie that both me and my husband love to bits – it will always be a favorite for us! And of course there are few examples of love truer than Buttercup and Westley’s. For the Princess, find a red, long sleeved dress and a long leather belt. Wear your hair in loose waves and bam! – Princess. Westley is easy to do – simply wear all black, find a face mask and a sword and you are swashbuckling and ready to go!

4. Mad Men

diy halloween couples costumesI’ve never personally seen Mad Men, but I know a lot of people who rave about the show! Seeing as the final season airs this year, so it might be a good time to pay tribute to this super fashionable show! To get the look, head to a thrift or vintage store and find threads that are reminiscent of the 1960s. Ladies, floral print dresses with simple lines paired with nylons are perfect and don’t forget those pearls! Gents, look sharp in a suit and tie.

5. Big Bang Theory

diy halloween couples costumesI really enjoy The Big Bang Theory – it’s such a funny and nerdy show! There are several great couples to emulate from this show – Penny and Leonard, Howard and Bernadette, or Sheldon and Amy – as pictured here.Β  The thing that is great about each character is that they each have their own individual style that is very recognizable. Google which character you want to be and raid your closet – it’s very likely you already have most pieces for these costumes!

6. Sandy and Danny

diy halloween couples costumesYou can never go wrong with a little Grease! “You’re the one that I want, you are the one I want, oooh, ooh oooooh honey!” Being a greaser is easy to do – cuff those jeans, don a leather jacket and chucks and slick back that hair and you are smoo-ooo-ooth. For the ladies, you can either go with the super sexed up version of Sandy, with the tight pants, leather jacket, and red pumps, or you can go with the more traditional Sandy, with a poodle skirt and sweater!

7. Tris and Four

Divergent has exploded in popularity – first with the books and followed by the first movie’s release earlier this year. I’ll admit it – I really do enjoy Divergent! Tris and Four are one of the hottest fictional couples right now and their look is super easy to pull off. Basically wear anything tight and leather, throw on a couple of fake tattoos and add a faux knife and even some fake blood stains and you’ve got yourself a B.A. look for a B.A. couple.

8. Rapunzel and Flynn

Another Disney favorite of mine Is Tangled! Flynn and Rapunzel make such a good couple! Another popular couple right now is Anna and Kristoff from Frozen, but I’ll admit it – I like Tangled better than Frozen! (Shh, don’t tell anyone or else I might get beat up). Flynn is put together by wearing gray pants, a cream/white button up, and a green vest with a belt. Rapunzel can be put together either by finding a costume or altering a dress you find at the thrift store. Braid your hair or use a wig and don’t forget Pascal!

9. Silent Film Stars

diy halloween couples costumesThis one is a fun twist on the typical 1920s and flapper-style costumes that you see at parties every year. Instead of just dressing to 9s like Gatsby and Daisy would, make sure your garb is black and white, add some white powdered make-up and some cue cards to become a silent film star! Throw on a black mustache and you’re instantly Charlie Chaplin! I love how clever and creative this couples costume is!

10. Doctor Who

This last one is one of my absolute faves. I’ve become a huge Whovian over the past few years and there are just so many great Doctor Who couples costume ideas! There are the star-crossed lovers, 10 and Rose,Β  the ever goofy 11 and his TARDIS, and the couple who waited, Amy and Rory. All of these options are so amazing! Unfortunately, hubby hasn’t seen any Doctor Who (…YET!) so we probably won’t be doing one of these costume ideas this year, but I hope that it is somewhere in our future!

  • These are amazing!! I am so in love 2,5, and 9. Will have to show my fella and try to get him in on this! πŸ™‚

I love them too – I think it would be so cool to try using face paint for the Day of the Dead or Silent Film stars. So fun! If you end up doing one of these ideas I’d love to see a pic! Thanks for stopping by πŸ™‚

  • What great ideas! I have to say I am a party pooper and never dress up, my husband hates it. We won’t even go to parties because you have to dress up, and I seriously refuse. Now that I have a little boy, I am thinking about starting to dress up as a family with him. If my husband and I did go to a party though, I would dress up as that Princess Buttercup and Westley πŸ™‚

I haven’t dressed up for years, and agree that sometimes it can feel a bit silly, but if you can get past that feeling, it can be a ton of fun! I love when families dress up with their children πŸ™‚ Totally concur – I think Buttercup and Westley is a strong contender for us this year seeing as it’s one of my hubby’s fave movies!

  • These are all so perfect!! I love the Mary poppins and Bert. But, my hubs is the worst at dressing up. He hates it! I MIGHT be able to convince him to dress up as Four, but only because its like something he’d wear anyway. Ha, men!! Pinning. πŸ™‚

    • Erica Sooter says:

I have friends who were Mary and Bert last year and they looked amazing! And haha, fair enough – Four is pretty easy to dress up as so maybe you can just trick him into wearing it! We will see what hubs and I do this year. Thanks for the love and the pin! πŸ™‚
